Our Activities
We work with African communities on the continent and in the diaspora to promote and support self-help efforts out of poverty. We do this by:
- providing training, information and advice to transfer skills, improve livelihoods and empower poor people
- raising awareness of the development issues facing marginalised African communities
- working with community based organisations to improve their ability to run their own projects
Current Projects
- In Ghana we are working in partnership with Self-Help Initiative Support Services (SISS) on the Urban Lifeline Project, a slum improvement programme with unemployed and homeless people in Agbogbloshie slum, Accra
- In South Africa we are collaborating with AGAPE Skills for Development, a Durban based cooperative of local artisans and craftworkers, to help build their membership and capacity
Past Projects
- The Househelp Training Project - a skills development and income generating program for female domestic assistants and young people in Accra, Ghana
- Using computers supplied by ComputerAid International, the setting up of computer training centres for Dodowa Civic Association, Christians in Development (CID) and Sidik Buare Islamic school - all in Ghana
- Producing Modern African Generation, an African development oriented magazine for young people in the UK and elsewhere
- Hosting of discussion forums on the net and in our offices in the UK
